Or about 27 percent of the world’s population. Twenty-five years before the growth surge, about 2.8 million people used the Internet.
People now communicate with each other anywhere. Anywhere in the world. Imagine that? Smartphones and PCs enable people to connect with people anywhere – and we mean anywhere – at any time. Can you believe how quickly telecommunications have advanced in just a few decades?

A major discovery in digital data storage has been made at the University of Southampton’s Optical Research Centre (ORC). Scientists have developed the storage device which allows unparalleled properties such as, 360 TB capacity, heat resistant up to 1,000 degrees centigrade, and it is believed to be capable of lasting until the end of time. This means that the device can hold all of man-kinds most important and influential materials for billions of years; major documents including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), Newton’s Opticks and The Bible, will survive the human race as it is such a stable form of vast digital storage. It may also be incredibly useful for organizations such as museums, libraries and governments to indefinitely store large amounts of data.
The innovative piece of technology was recently showcased to UNESCO at the International Year of Light’s closing ceremony in Mexico. Made of nanostructured glass, the device records and retrieves the five dimensional (5D) data by femtosecond laser writing, and ORC demonstrated this at the renowned event by recording the documents using ultrafast laser, producing extremely short and intense pulses of light.
The storage device has been coined the ‘Superman memory crystal’, due to its comparison to the memory crystals in the Superman movies.
Here is what professor Peter Kazansky from the ORC had to say about their amazing discovery: “This technology can secure the last evidence of our civilization; all we’re learnt will not be forgotten.”
Fossil Fuel Usage is a Problem – Solar and Wind are the Solution
So let’s be frank about fossil fuel usage. Most all of us can agree that there is a whole lot of coal, oil, and natural gas in the Earth, but that amount is truly finite.
There isn’t going to be any more made anytime soon.
At the same time, even though our earthly gas tank is running out, there is still plenty of time to adopt new technologies to replace these nonrenewable resources. Of course, the downside of all this is that, quite honestly, many of the “alternatives” that are bandied about are in some ways as catastrophic as the carbon-rich fuels they seek to replace.
Nuclear power? There actually is a strong argument for researching new ways to use this resource where isotopes with much shorter half-lives (down to “only” a century or two, but still within the realm of container life) could be researched and utilized, but the problem with nuclear is that the United States leads the way in this research and, honestly, isn’t doing much of it. The disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima, as well as Three Mile Island all show that even a little problem is a big problem in the current nuclear world.
What about hydroelectric? Some of the same problem – an environmental issue from the very start. If we look at looming disasters like the Mosul Dam and the incredible losses as a result of the Three Gorges project in China, to say nothing of the mighty Colorado River that barely even makes it to the sea anymore, the reality of hydro power is that shipping is restricted and water flow downstream is virtually stopped.
Still a bad deal.
No, in the end, the existing technologies that we need to spend time and effort developing are in the wind and solar realm. Even “electric” cars are ultimately powered now by coal-fired power plants, but by increasing our focus on using the wind and the sun, whose power is not going anywhere anytime soon, we can reduce the critical carbon emissions that are plaguing our planet, especially in the developing world, and begin to heal what 150 years of fossil fueled industrial revolution have done to our planet.
How do we do this? We have to spend the time in the research field and make shifts in our expectations. Solar is now more affordable that ever, yet many home owners cannot afford the initial investment simply because of the cost of set-up and the fact there is no way to reasonably shunt extra power back into the power grid. Of course, electric companies are in no hurry to lose money, and if we, as customers don’t ask for it, no one will provide it. Simply put, we collectively have to get involved.

Less Fuel Usage and Higher Efficiency
Early reports about Driverless Cars suggest that they will be highly more efficient than normal vehicles, partly because no longer will they be victim to clumsy human error. Traffic Jams and accidents will become a thing of the past, because Driverless car technology will have vehicles driving more efficiently – more closely bunched together, which will also reduce wind drag and fuel usage. Also, the plan is to make most (if not all) Driverless vehicles electric or solar powered; they will also be lighter and made with more environmentally sound materials.
More People Can Drive
Because they are safe and do not rely on human operation, it is most likely that more people such as teenagers, the elderly, and handicapped people will be able to “drive” or be passengers in these vehicles. Also, it could allow people who have been out drinking or are under the influence in some way, to get home safely without having a designated driver, or paying for a cab or Uber.
Driverless Car technology is going to change auto industry and the rest of the world in dramatic ways, especially financially. Driverless Cars are going to save the users, and local and state governments, a tremendous amount of money. For over a century, incandescent light bulbs have been an integral part of how we light up cities and towns, our homes and businesses. And yes, we have Thomas Edison to thank for this.
But the truth is out: thanks to recent discoveries about the ill effects of coal being used to power our homes, as well as being draining on our bank accounts, incandescent bulbs—containing tungsten heated in a vacuum–are no longer the golden child of electrical power. Granted, they are still being used in smaller appliances such as over-the-stove lights and decorative lighting fixtures such as chandeliers and small bedside table lamps, so they’re not completely gone.
Yet if people want the warmth from an incandescent bulb—both in color and in heat—they might as well look to candles and fireplaces again, because slowly but surely, incandescents are being taken off the market and replaced with the new kid on the block: LED bulbs.
How LEDs Are Better Than Incandescents
Let’s start off with what LED stands for and a tiny bit on how they work. Then we’ll compare the efficiency of LED vs incandescent bulbs. In a world full of acronyms, “LED” is just one of many, but knowing what the letters stand for may help to understand just why these blue-white beauties are increasingly popular amongst earth lovers and frugal types alike.
LED means “Light-Emitting Diode.” Essentially this means that light is being created using a semiconductor, instead of the element known as tungsten, the latter being used in Edison’s now-passe’ brainchild. And while LEDs are only now becoming used more often in homes and businesses, LEDs have been around a lot longer than you might think. Those blinking colored indicators on your laptop and PC? Those are LEDs. Stop lights and car tail-lights? Those, too, are LEDs, and such bulbs have been used in many, many other applications.
The different colors are formed using different element combinations, but the white color—created using yttrium aluminum garnet–is what has been used most often in items such as desk lamps and lighting for your big table lamps and ceiling fixtures.
One major reason why LEDs have become better than incandescents is the cost of one LED bulb purchase, compared to how many times incandescents have to be replaced. It used to be that incandescents were still used extensively even at the very beginning of the new millenium, because the cost of one 60-watt bulb was upwards of $100, as of 2009. However, it is 2016 and the technology of LED bulbs for the home has improved so much that the cost has gone down drastically.
You can go online and order one 60W bulb for around six dollars-and-odd-change and thanks to the way LED technology works, that bulb will last you a good long time—some say upwards of ten to twenty years—while all the incandescents you might purchase over that time period burn out within a few months to a year. Not only is that a drain on your wallet from having to purchase bulbs over and over, but with all the heat that incandescents put out, that’s a drain on the planet’s resources as well.
LED vs Incandescent Bulbs – Advantages of LEDs Over Incandescents
Many people might be slow to adopt LEDs because they’re accustomed to the warm golden glow of an incandescent bulb, and they might be sensitive to the compact fluorescent light bulbs on the market. And the white LEDs tend to be brighter than incandescents, so some people might balk at this. They want lighting that’s “cozy” and “warm.”
If you’re one of these people, you’re not alone. But, if you happen to also appreciate science, consider the following before you completely dismiss using something so scientific-sounding as “light-emitting diodes” for your table lamps and dinner-table chandeliers:
1) LEDs Are Better For the Planet. It’s been said many times, but it bears repeating. The amount of “pull” on the grid by LEDs is significantly less than an incandescent. LEDs can run a little warm, but nowhere near as hot as incandescent bulbs, which can actually burn you. All that energy that incandescents use comes from the power grid, which is fueled by coal. Given the fracking issues we’ve had lately, coal is not earth-friendly. But LEDs are.
2) LEDs Are Better For Your Pocketbook. Think of how many times you have had to purchase incandescents in the past. Many times, a 60W incandescent bulb package will have approximately two to four bulbs, for about the price of one 60W LED bulb. Replace as many incandescents with LEDs as you can and watch your utility bill drop.
3) LEDs Could Easily Be Better For Your Eyes. Because LEDs burn whiter and brighter, the luminosity of an LED is considerably greater than that of an incandescent. It’s said that the dimmer the lighting, the more you will strain your eyes. Put an LED in a spot where you work the most (especially if it’s a crafting area) and watch your eye-strain headaches go away.
These are just three reasons why LEDs are gaining a strong advantage over their old-school cousins. As time goes on and LED technology improves, more and more benefits will emerge, and the incandescents we’ve known so well will permanently fade away with the ghost of their creator.
New Upcoming MMO Virtual Reality Game, Thanks To IBM’s Supercomputer
Something big is brewing in the virtual reality world that has the internet in an excited frenzy. IBM Japan will be launching a real upcoming MMO VR version of the anime series set in an online game: Sword Art online: the beginning. The event will be hosted in Tokyo between the 18th and the 20th March in Tokyo and is intended to be an experience like no other.
This 20-minute marketing experience will highlight the possibilities that IBM’s supercomputer offers to the VR gaming world at large. Naturally, this sort of cognitive computing linked with some of the world’s top gaming experiences has the MMORPG communities beyond excited.
Only a select few, 208 to be exact, from the Tokyo area will get to experience this event where their own images will be scanned into the upcoming MMO game using a 3D scanner. These images will form the basis of an avatar to be used throughout the experience.
While the show makes use of mind-controlled VR, the event will be making use of motion controllers, supporting both the Oculus rift and HTC Vive according to Slashgear’s report. Of course, followers of the show are sitting on edge for something a little more intuitive but that seems set further in the future of virtual reality MMORPG. So until then, we’ll patiently wait and enjoy a full body experience.
The event is tagged as a VR MMO occasion; however, it seems that the massive multiplayer part of the game, for now, will be limited to a 4-player experience. There is bright hope that this “alpha” test, as many websites and forums have referred to it, will indeed develop into something as massive and as real as life itself.
